Who am I?
I am Kevin Smith, a psychologist, graduated from UQAC in psychology (2017), and then from UQÀM in clinical psychology and research (2022). I have also worked at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute (2022-2024) and in a private practice (2022-…).
During this academic and professional journey, I had the opportunity to clearly identify my therapist identity. I discuss it here because finding a psychologist can be more complex than choosing an approach, a location, availabilities, or following someone’s advice. Indeed, there is a ‘matching’ process, a form of interaction that one might expect. Of course, what we can expect from a psychologist can reveal aspects of ourselves, how we navigate our relationships, and can also be a topic of reflection in therapy. Nevertheless, these expectations are crucial because they address a need, and it matters whether the psychologist in front of us can meet that need.
Let me describe myself succinctly. Emphasizing the ‘here and now’ of the therapeutic relationship in my work, I am authentic and share my reflections in therapy as if we were both working on a puzzle together. Indeed, my experience in relationships can be useful since it may resemble that of other people in your circle, and discussing it together can lead to awareness of certain relational patterns. While I am more familiar with psychodynamic and existential approaches, different issues may require different ways of working. For example, I believe that crisis situations may call for more structured interventions with behavioral components. I don’t prioritize giving advice in general; instead, I maintain a curious attitude toward your current behavioral, emotional, and mental processes. My goal is to foster curiosity about yourself, leading to a deeper self-understanding and choices aligned with the life direction you desire.
